Do you remember The Sussex Club? A Collecting and Reminiscing session

5:30 pm, Thursday 25th June 2026

Location: Museum Lab, Brighton and Hove Museums

Tickets: Free, booking essential

Do you remember The Sussex Club? Down a mysterious basement in Regency Square where you had to ring a bell and wait to be admitted?

This humble bar with an area for performers and the obligatory pool table was pivotal in the lives of many lesbians in Brighton and Hove and further afield. We're opening this collection event to the lesbians of Sussex, and we want to invite you to come along and share stories, relive dramas and meet old chums.

We’re nudging your memories for an extended prequel to the September History Club session with surprise guests, so your contribution at this gathering is crucial!

You’ll also get a chance to look at some photos and sign up for an exciting social group. If you have any photos from previously attending The Sussex Club, please bring these with you! Alternatively, send in your images to the QHS team to be apart of this session. Please send media through to Bee, our Project and Volunteer Coordinator at bee@marlboroughproductions.org.uk.

This collecting session will be hosted by Brighton local, Deborah Price. Deborah, newly out, ventured to the Sussex club when it was first open. The club was very important to her and, she is aware, to so many women in the area. It provided a safe, convivial space - and of course was the backdrop for many dramas and tales of heartbreak and romance! During this session, she'll be sharing her stories from back in the day, showing a message from Shirley (The Sussex Club landlady) and hosting a space where women can tell their stories, make new friends, discover blasts from the past and set the scene for a further presentation in September. The Sussex Club will be remembered!
